 'The Hill' as culture

Discussion ForumsAnonymous writes "During the class years of '67-'68' & '68-'69...we at Gunn High School had 'The Hill' as a place to go to 'smoke cigarettes'. This was a dirt area north of the Art Room building backed by a fenced 'settling basin' and the old RR Track Grade. The uniqueness of this 'safe zone' smoking area was that it actually existed at all. Somehow, the-powers-that-be who made decisions regarding student conduct at Gunn were able to set aside a place for STUDENTS to smoke cigarettes without actually LEAVING the campus. STILL a miracle of magnitude in my mind for that or any other time. Since minors were technically barred from purchasing cigarettes, there was no ban on actually consuming them, so rather than confront student stepping off-campus to imbibe in smoking, 'THE HILL' was established to keep student technically on school district property. There was a bold white line marked on pavement separating the access drive from the lawn fringe of the Art Room building; the dirt/oak tree-doted area being deemed 'neutral' school district property. br> In our world today of 'political correctness', I still find that decision then, made by adults, in control of minors, a bold and courageous move. The community was in support of Dr. McLean's fair-handed approach to the problem of minors smoking during school hours. 'The Hill' was only available for smoking during brunch, lunch, and with a faculty member present.
I was one the very few to challenge the 'white line', not because of any real reason, but just to 'rattle the cage' of the administration; my status then was as a 'young hippy type'. I purposely stood on the 'wrong side' of the white line and was ordered to report to Main Office for disciplinary actions. Of course I marched across campus , lit cigarette in hand, into the office lobby and snuffed-out my smoke in the potted plant just inside the door. Although my actions were clearly outside any justifiable stance, my punishment was so minor it ranked as insignificant.
I post this story of a past era at Gunn High School to show that everyday life's frustrations and confrontations have always been part of youth culture interacting with perceived adult power. Today, with texting cellphone message rampant, our offspring are confronted with absolute power at school; more appearance of fair-minded alternative measures to control behaviors, deemed 'out-of-bounds', is required in order to define required limits.
I hope than communication with youth, parents, faculty, administrators, and the general constituency can promote cooperation and true GUIDANCE for our future citizens. Otherwise our nation WILL be threatened from WITHIN itself. Gunn High School was, and I hope still is, a place where the art of communication is taught, along with 'the 3 R's' to our future constituency. "

Charles Dowd, class of 1966, died recently

ObituariesAnonymous writes " Charles Dowd, a member of Gunn's first graduating class, died of pancreatic cancer on March 23, 2010. For 35 years he was a professor of music at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He also was a founding member of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra. His musical specialty was percussion and he played the tympani in the Eugene Orchestra. Every quarter his students gave a public percussion concert which became noted for creativity and just plain fun. Dowd claimed he began as a rock and roll drummer in the Bay area. He was highly respected by his students, fellow musicians, and patrons of music. At a Eugene Symphony concert just a few days prior to his death he was honored by a tribute. Four of his former students performed a percussion work dedicated to Dowd. Dowd is survived by his musician wife and two sons, plus two by a former marriage. John Attig, former Gunn social studies teacher. jnhattig@efn.org "
