Here you will find our trip logs and pictures as they come out.

Happenings aboard Mandolin and in our lives:

Ellen and I spent the 4th of July anchored near Warrior Point on the Columbia to watch the St. Helens fireworks. This was a fun trip about 3 hours from our moorage. We didn't get any sailing in, but it was nice to stop working on projects for a while. Anchoring went smooth despite the conditions. The current was coming down the river, but the wind would push the boat against the current. This required that we set a stern anchor, then go up river to set the bow anchor before we centered between the two. Other boats from our moorage anchored near us included: Kevin, Sheryl and kids on Windblown; Toby, Linda and kids on Dreamweaver; Bob and Kristine on Khaista; Peter on Undine; Rick and Pam on Cat's Paw; Darrel and Kathy on Voyager; The Payne's aboard their Horizon 42 and Randy on his wooden ketch. We paddled the kayak around to visit everyone, then went for a walk on the beach. Dessert was provided aboard Khaista where we watched the fireworks. Once the show was over it was amazing to watch all the small powerboats take off up the river at breakneck speeds despite the logs and debris we had seen all day long. During the night we were rocked by the wakes from a few ships as they passed by. We had a lazy morning playing on the beach before we started back up the channel to our moorage.

Got a great start on the hard top for our dodger this last weekend as well. (A dodger is the boat equivalent of a windshield and roof that covers the front part of the cockpit.) It is constructed of coremat and a layer of 8 oz. fiberglass sandwiched between two sheets of 1/8 inch Poplar plywood with West Systems Epoxy. All of this covered in another layer of fiberglass. It is being shaped to the existing 1 inch stainless steel tubing frame and will be finished with Sunbrella fabric sides and vinyl windows. We suspect to finish the top this weekend.

Ellen is currently in southern California for a week helping the rest of her family take care of their father who is in ill health. We wish them all the best.

My last day of work is on the 15th, a week from today. We will be having an evening potluck on the dock to get into the cruising mode, come if you are able to. Until then I am scrambling to get my responsibilities transferred to one of my work associates. Still working to sell the bikes, cars and other items I mentioned in an earlier email.

Cheers,

Todd and Ellen Mandeville
