Puerto Vallarta to La Cruz: 3/30/99

After extracting our selves from the entrada which included picking up two anchors and two lines tied to shore we motorsailed across Banderas Bay to La Cruz. The conditions were perfect for sailing, but being low on water we had to run the motor and make water for 2 hours to fill our tanks. Still it was great to put the jib up and gain some extra speed.

The main purpose for our stop in La Cruz is to pick up some fruits and vegetables at Wednesday's farmers market. We found the ladies selling fruits and vegetables and loaded up. We actually filled our two backpacks for $8 US. Unlike similar markets in the states there was only on place selling fruits and vegetables, the rest sold cleaning supplies, shoes, clothes, hair brushes, cereal, hardware, and music CD's.

Delfin, a restaurant on the waterfront street, was a big hit by having great coffee for Ellen and the best chiliquilles we have had to date. Chiliquilles are a Mexican breakfast dish consisting of dried tortillas, covered with a mild salsa then topped with onions and cheese. They are usually served with a side of beans. The American owner came to Mexico a few years ago on his boat before starting this restaurant so we had a lot to talk about. His Mexican wife was the talented cook and two children rounded out the rest of the crew taking orders and serving meals. When they weren't busy serving us or cooking they were having their own breakfast while teaching their children English and discussing better ways to run the business. Definitely a cruiser hangout since before we left we ran into five more boaters who had come to breakfast. If your are ever in La Cruz, look this place up.
